"England U21 failure? Southgate's record was P33 W27 D3 L3. He won the 2016 Toulon tournament."

Those U21 stats look impressive until you check the 2015 European U21 Championship where "Under Southgate England....were knocked out in the group stages, finishing last in their group."

So he won a friendly tournament that included China, Togo, Qatar, Mexico, Scotland, S Korea, Japan, Canada, Turkey, and only Portugal and France were from top footballing nations.

Southgate also got relegated from PL with Middlesboro...

I rest my case. Hopefully Southgate has learnt from his mistakes but I saw no sign of it at the WC. The "expert" commentaries about Southgate sickened me tbh. Sycophantic bullshit. Southgate is a loser until he proves otherwise.

Re: Why we are out of the World Cup
Brentford - it is simple and has been pointed out. Leagues like Croatia are not flooded with foreigners. Italy have mainly Italian players and Spain have pretty much their entire team made up from RM and Barca. The PL is flooded with foreign players and if you saw the stats of how many players were represented at the WC from the PL it is plainly obvious what is happening. Phil Foden is an undoubted talent but how much game time is he getting? There are lots of good youngsters but they all get farmed out to the lower leagues. The question is asked, been answered but how it will ever be addressed I have no idea. So, crap leagues like Croatia are developing Croatian players hence they are better than most of our players. I think Kane is a class act and a few others stuck out but players like Sterling get found out when they haven't got De Bruyne, Sane, Villa and the likes putting it on a plate for them. I enjoyed it, we did o.k. but I am firmly in the camp that we will never have a comp open up like that for us again and we ultimately f**ked it up.

Not so much this time Soldo SON, meant the previous 20 odd years of under achievement.

How do other nations with worse leagues, less money and some like Croatia with little structure keep producing better players than we do?
Until that question is asked and answered we will not improve!

Sold. I'm with you. A couple of gifted and disciplined midfielders and we are not far off. To be honest I've felt we were getting better gor a long time, its just that Southgate has got the leadership right.

At ag....

I doubt they will improve Soldo son. Maybe more experienced but still lacking the technical skills and brains, and a coach who is a real tactician to get the best out of them.
You can't learn technical skills and thought once you are an adult, it has to be from a young age and as far as I can see nothing has ever changed here despite all the house after every failure.

In all seriousness though.... I loved watching us play... yeah it fell apart a bit last half v Croats but so be it... we ain't the finished article and anyone with any savvy knows that... it's been a breath of fresh air compared to two years ago absolute chalk and cheese... loved watching Stones and Maguire at the back... Tripp and Hendo been excellent... we know where we are short and we had to play to what we had and to be fair for the vast majority of the t'ment we did... no disgrace coming 4th... onwards and (hopefully) upwards

Re: Why we are out of the World Cup
I don't get how tiny nations with little money and structure can produce better players than England?

The most technically gifted England player was sat at home.

Too many similar players, young headless chicken types who rely on power and pace, possession that goes sideways then backwards for Pickford to hoof, balls to the back post, set pieces and not much else.
Only difference this time was expectations were at an all time low and we had an easy run of games.

Not hard to see where our shortcomings are as they've been the same for decades.

Spot on correct.

I'd add too many Tottenham players that are bottlers and a pathetic, clueless PL and England U21 failure as manager.

Re: Why we are out of the World Cup
Ali did not perform for Spurs all season and took that into the WC. Not one good performance from him offensively. Sterling had a blinder for City but has been found out for England.

Two players that Southgate had perfect replacements for in RLC and Rashford but only used them sparingly whilst Ali and Sterling went through whole WC offering nothing up front.

Too much loyalty shown.

Re: Why we are out of the World Cup
No real world class players. Feels like sterling ‘ Kane and Ali only really work well in their club teams and can’t really improve a normal side. (As England are).

As many have pointed out, no great midfielders either. No one really creative. The nearest we had was lotus cheek who doesn’t really have the experience so didn’t get on much (but I’d have played him instead of Ali).

Finally, Southgate is very “steady eddy” like most English managers have been. I think the top coaches with experience know how to rearrange a side and do something bold when things aren’t working. Southgate pretty much put his hands in his pockets and hoped for the best.

Sometimes it’s not a sub you need but a complete tactical change. You’ve got to be bold and you’ve got to plan for that. The way mouhrinho coached his best teams was to always have a plan b formation. I don’t think Southgate did that.

But that’s all nit picking really. He got to a semi final ffs! Made me happy. Nice one Gareth!

Replace with Sessegnon, Jadon Sancho, Ademola Lookman and Phil Foden

Re: Why we are out of the World Cup
Need to get Jack Wilshere & Ravel Morrison back playing again. Croatia (Modric) & France (Pogba) showed the need for deep lying ball carrying CM’s.

Plus you’ve gotta put the ball im the back of the net (how many chances did we miss??)

Other than that was proud of the boys, played to there potential.

Re: Why we are out of the World Cup
England played two decent teams Belgium and Croatia and lost both games - so essentially business as usual.

I know England fans accuse the Irish, Scots and Welsh of sour grapes but no one can deny that the serious discussion in the media about moving the Wimbledon final as so as not to clash with England in the world cup final was breathing arrogance.
Guilty as charged.
